Alpha-fetoprotein is the abbreviation for alpha-fetoprotein. In a developing baby's liver, this protein is produced. Baby's AFP levels are generally high at birth, but they drop to very low levels by the time the child turns one. AFP levels should be extremely low in healthy people. In adults, an AFP tumor marker test detects levels of AFP in their blood.
