As part of your lumbar spine X-ray, your doctor may see what the anatomy of your lower back looks like. Five vertebral bones make up the lumbar spine. Small amounts of radiation are used in the X-ray to see the lower back, including the lumbar vertebrae (L1 to L5), their intervertebral discs, and the surrounding soft tissues like muscles.
